Our Process

Understanding the Landscape.

The first step in knowledge extraction is to identify all of the entities and structural data within a set of documents from the targeted industry: the people, places, concepts, numbers, sentiment, patents, articles, quotes, etc. A series of custom classifiers extract and resolve those entities and store them in a knowledge base. We then identify relationships between pairs of entities using unsupervised methodologies. Every piece of data that we capture retains its provenance, giving us full transparency on the decisions made by downstream algorithms.

Confirming our POV

We construct models of reality based on streams of millions of documents. By de-duplicating and reconciling statements made by multiple observers, we create an ensemble version of the corpus. For any given event, there can be thousands of varying descriptions, from the people involved to the tiniest details. Taking a multi-document approach allows us to capture this variation as signal rather than noise. The multi-document approach improves performance metrics of the structuring engine compared with single document approaches.

Identifying Opportunity Areas & Risks

Which areas of R&D are the next big things? Using the mapping and validation created in steps 1 and 2, we now identify hot spots of innovation through the mathematical patterns within patents, scientific papers and capital allocation. By focusing on the areas of IP that are highly contested versus being dominated by a single organization and by understanding the relationships between established sectors, we can isolate technology whitespaces, and find opportunities for commercialization.

Realization of IP requires specialized services such as qualifying bidders, monitoring contracts, preparing progress reports, coordinating schedules, technology evaluations, testing, and supervision. Douglas Blackwell will set the appropriate parameters with you to acquire these services during our rigorous bidding process. Once the team is selected to build the technology, we conduct regular visits, audits and quality assessments to provide progress reports and ensure the quality and integrity of the project is upheld and on track.

Regardless of how strong the IP is, if not created properly, it will not be able to achieve its desired purpose. Part of this process requires oversight over the business and technical requirement documentation and Douglas Blackwell ensures that both capture the intent of the IP.

Finally, Douglas Blackwell will review all invoicing, financial terms, and change orders, before our clients submit payments.
